Finding the Calm Within

How to Cultivate Calm When Completely Depleted and Triggered During Baby’s Crying

The sound of your baby's cry or your little one’s temper tantrum can trigger a range of emotions in any mother. It's completely normal to feel overwhelmed, frustrated, or even helpless when your little one is crying. However, they can feel our energy and by managing our stress and nurturing a calm nervous system, you can better navigate these challenging moments and create a peaceful environment for both you and your baby. In this blog, we will explore effective strategies to help you stay calm and centered when you’re little one is having a hard time.

Pause and Breathe:

When you feel your stress levels rising, take a moment to pause and take a deep breath. Deep breathing triggers the body's relaxation response, activating the parasympathetic nervous system and calming the mind. Inhale deeply through your nose, hold for a few seconds, and exhale slowly through your mouth. Repeat this several times, allowing yourself to find a sense of calmness and presence. Release any tense body parts and muscles that are activated. Do a full body scan and completely relax them.

Practice Mindfulness:

Mindfulness can help you stay grounded during stressful moments. Instead of getting caught up in your thoughts or emotions, bring your attention to the present moment. Observe your baby's crying without judgment or the need to fix it immediately. Practice self-compassion and remind yourself that crying is a normal part of your baby's communication. By staying present and accepting the situation, you can create a space of calmness within yourself.

Establish Self-Care Rituals:

Prioritizing self-care is absolutely crucial for managing stress as a mother. Self-care can include things such as nourishing your mind and body with healthy food that leave you feeling better, taking a moment to quiet your busy mind while feeding your little one, or practicing gentle yoga and stretching exercises with your baby, enjoying a cup of herbal tea, or engaging in a hobby you love. Self-care rituals provide an opportunity to recharge, release tension, and cultivate a more balanced calm nervous system. Remember, taking care of yourself is essential for your own well-being and your ability to care for your baby.

These techniques can help you release tension, reduce stress, and restore a sense of calmness.

Seek Support:

Remember that you don't have to face the challenges of motherhood alone. Reach out to your partner, family, or trusted friends for support. They can offer a listening ear, practical assistance, or a much-needed break when you need time for self-care. Joining support groups or seeking professional guidance from therapists or counsellors who specialize in postpartum support can also be immensely helpful. Surrounding yourself with a supportive network can alleviate stress and provide a sense of reassurance.

Practice Self-Compassion:

Be gentle with yourself and recognize that it's natural to feel overwhelmed or frustrated when your baby is crying. Practice self-compassion by acknowledging your emotions without judgment. Remind yourself that you are doing your best as a mother, and it's okay to ask for help or take breaks when needed. Treat yourself with kindness, and remember that every moment is an opportunity to learn and grow in your role as a caregiver.
Caring for a crying baby can be challenging and stressful. However, by implementing these strategies to manage stress and cultivate a calm nervous system, you can navigate these moments with greater ease and tranquillity. Remember to prioritize self-care, seek support, and practice mindfulness. As you create a space of calmness within yourself, you'll be better equipped to soothe and comfort your baby.
